Webster County Schools Superintendent Joseph Arbogast announced that the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) has approved the county’s request for a waiver related to the 180 instructional day requirement for students following the winter weather emergency during the week of January 26–30, 2026.
During that week, Webster County Schools experienced multiple weather-related closures. The district utilized two Non-Traditional Instructional (NTI) days and three traditional snow days. Under guidance from the WVDE, only traditional snow days were eligible to be included in the waiver request.
The WVDE has approved Webster County’s request to waive the three traditional snow days that occurred during that week. This waiver ensures that students will still meet the state-required 180 instructional days for the school year.
“This waiver helps ensure our students meet the state instructional requirements while recognizing the unique circumstances caused by the state of emergency during that week,” said Superintendent Joseph Arbogast. “We appreciate the support and consideration from the West Virginia Department of Education in approving this request.”
It is important to note that the waiver applies to students only in relation to the 180 instructional day requirement. School employees are still required to fulfill their full 200-day contracts as outlined in their employment agreements.
Webster County Schools appreciates the cooperation and flexibility of students, families, and staff during the winter weather disruptions earlier this year.
